De zangeres van 2015 is voor mij de Amerikaanse Rhiannon Giddens. Multicultureel kun je haar noemen, met een blanke vader en een zwarte moeder, terwijl ze zelf getrouwd is met een Ierse musicus. Ook haar muzieksmaak is een smeltkroes aan invloeden. Ze studeerde opera aan het conservatorium en daarna werd het vooral folk, jazz, gospel, blues en country. Ze zingt niet alleen prachtig, maar speelt ook uitstekend banjo en viool in haar groep de Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Giddens is zeer maatschappelijke betrokken en bezield, zoals blijkt uit het feit dat haar groep zich vooral richt op verwaarloosde Afro-Amerikaanse folkmuziek en op persoonlijke en historische verhalen, wit en zwart, in de folkmuziek. Ze zegt er zelf over, “Everybody’s got skeletons in their closet; everybody’s got those horrible pieces of the past that they’d rather forget about. But you kind of have to make a stand. If everyone just says “Well, horrible things happened here, I’m leaving,” then that’s no good. Part of me just wants to be there, to be the change I want to see in the world. And I want to do that at home. (…) We have never pretended to have gone through the hardships that those guys went through, we are standing on their shoulders. It’s because of what they went through that we can do what we do today.”

In 2013 stal Giddens de show tijdens het concert Another Day, Another Time dat geïnspireerd was door de film Inside Llewyn Davis. In 2014 viel ze op bij The New Basement Tapes, een supergroep met o.a. Marcus Mumford & Elvis Costello, die gevormd werd door producer T Bone Burnett om herontdekte nummers van Bob Dylan op de plaat te zetten. En dit jaar verscheen haar solo-album Tomorrow Is My Turn dat enorm enthousiast is ontvangen. Zo wordt ze nu al “the greatest folk diva of our era” genoemd.

Giddens heeft een geweldige stem, zoals je kunt horen in het lied She’s Got You, dat geschreven werd door de Amerikaanse country singer/songwriter Hank Cochran en in 1962 een hit werd in de versie van zangeres Patsy Cline (1932-1963). Ik had een prachtige live uitvoering van Giddens gevonden in de Grand Ole Opry, maar die is niet meer te vinden. Dus moet je het helaas doen met de plaatversie.
