Eén van de eerste nummers van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Michael Franks dat ik hoorde was het lied Eggplant. Het komt van zijn 2e album The Art Of Tea uit 1976 en gaat over het koken van een aubergine door zijn vriendin.

Hij speelt het hier in 1978 samen met het Metropole Orkest onder leiding van Rogier van Otterloo (1941-1988) in het muzikale tv-programma van Pim Jacobs (1934-1996).

Ik heb jarenlang veel geluisterd naar de ontspannen “smooth, romantic, jazz-influenced style” van Michael Franks, die past in de zogenaamde “Quiet Storm” beweging. Een radio format dat vanaf midden jaren 70 veel succes had. De naam kende ik niet, maar het is een genre waar ik heel veel van heb gedraaid en nog steeds draai met o.a. genres als Smooth Soul en Westcoast Pop.
