Het Amerikaanse duo Hall & Oates uit Philadelphia begon in de jaren 70 met een eigen vorm van Blue-Eyed Philly Soul. Maar in de jaren 80 waren singer/songwriters Daryl Hall & John Oates vooral succesvol met hun pop/rock muziek en werden daardoor uiteindelijk het meest succesvolle duo aller tijden.

Een heel lekker nummer van hen vind ik I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do), dat komt van hun album Private Eyes uit 1981. Ze spelen het hier tijdens een concert in Montreal in 1983 en maken er een spetterend optreden van. Let vooral op het rap-achtige stukje samen met het publiek vanaf 4.20 minuten.

Je zou denken dat het nummer gaat over een relatie tussen twee mensen, maar in werkelijkheid gaat het volgens songwriter John Oates “about the music business. That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers & agents, being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively.”
