Lonely People is een opgewekt lied van de Amerikaanse band America, dat ze hier spelen tijdens een sessie in 1975. Het nummer werd geschreven door Dan Peek (1950-2011) en zijn vrouw Catherine en komt van hun 4e album Holiday uit 1974. Die plaat werd geproduceerd door George Martin, die zoals je weet ook met The Beatles werkte. Met hem maakte America in totaal 7 albums in de periode 1974-1979.

Het lied Lonely People is een optimistische reactie op Eleanor Rigby van The Beatles uit 1966. Peek ervaarde dat nummer als overweldigend, vooral door het beeld van “the masses of lost humanity, drowning in grey oblivion”. Hij voelde zich verscheurd door het refrein van Eleanor Rigby, met de zin: “All the lonely people: where do they all come from? … where do they all belong?” Het nummer werd door Peek & zijn vrouw Catherine geschreven vlak voor hun huwelijk.

Voor hun relatie ervaarde hij zichzelf altijd als een melancholisch en eenzaam persoon, maar nu had hij het gevoel dat hij gewonnen had. Hun advies aan eenzame mensen in het lied is, “Don’t give up until you drink from the silver cup.” Een metafoor die Peek als volgt verklaart, “It’s possible to drink from another’s well of experience…and be refreshed.”
